Hilton Comes to Waldorf

January 21, 2008 8:15 am 0 comments

Hilton is coming to Waldorf!  No, not the whining airheaded blond bimbo with more money than sense, but the Hilton Hotel Chain has plans to build their first hotel in Charles County.  Specifically, they’re planning on settling in Waldorf, Maryland, near the St. Charles Town Center Mall.

The land was purchased for $1.95 Million Dollars, and Hilton plans on building a 130 room Hilton on the location.  Apparently they like the fact that the location has close proximity to the mall and “O’Donnell Lake”(When I was a kid “O’Donnell Lake” was known as “that drainage pond behind the movie theatre”).

Donna Dudley, Charles County’s tourism director said “It’s very well located with the theater, the mall and the office
building right there. It will be very convenient for business and
leisure travelers.”

I had no idea that there was any sort of real tourism in Waldorf, when was the last time you heard of packing the family in the station wagon and tripping down to Waldorf, Maryland for a weekend of hiking at O’Donnell Lake?

In all seriousness, this is probably very good news.  Charles County does not have any sort of high end hotel currently, and this does provide more selection for travelers.  While this hotel is slated to open in 2009, it’s competition is well into the construction phase.

Marriott is in the process of building a Courtyard Hotel on the parcel of land adjacent to Best Buy and immediately behind the Long and Foster Building on Rt. 301.  Both hotels will be competing for travelers looking for a more comfortable stay in the area.

As a side note, American Community Properties Trust(ACPT), sold the land to Hilton and is also building a 2 story office building next door to it.  ACPT is the same group that brought us the St. Charles planned development back in the 1960′s.

Bank of America partially lifting nationwide freeze on foreclosure

Bank of America says it is partially lifting its nationwide freeze on foreclosures even as regulators pressed for an investigation of major banks. The move by Bank of America, the largest mortgage servicing lender, could lift investor hopes for an easing in the foreclosure documents crisis. The foreclosure woes have threatened bank earnings and cast even more doubt on the health of the fragile US housing market. At issue are allegations that banks failed to review foreclosure documents properly or submitted false statements [...]

St. Charles Town Center Mall Improvements!

I digress, I haven’t been impressed with the mall here in Charles County recently.  One of the reasons is because they have been doing a lot of renovation work on it, and navigating through a maze of cones and equipment isn’t exactly my cup of tea. It looks like they’re getting close to finishing their work, so I stopped by to take a couple of pictures and see what the changes look like. In short, I think the modernization project looks [...]
